Mystery Bug

Found this chap in the pond this morning.

If I had to estimate, I'd say about 1.5" long.

When upset he looks like this.

When really angry two whitish triangles appeared at the tip of his tale, probably a sting.

He was released away from the houses.

Any ideas what this is? Thanks.

That is a Devil's Coach Horse beetle:

I found one crawling across my living room floor last autumn.

Again thanks to Bill and Rich for the identification.

A nice romantic name for a wild looking insect.

Also known as a "cock-tail bug".
